the business of cancer

yeah. in a perfect world — and obvi not perfect, perfect — plans are made well in advance for the incaseshit times. but it has been my experience that rare is it the case that “things” are really taken care of.

we all talk a good game. especially when an untimely death hits close to home. once all of the details are ironed out, everyone takes note, and vows to get their own houses in order.

never happens…

let me back up. i am not planning on dying. no time soon, matter of fact. but let’s just say…i need to get my shit in order. and i, for one, am ashamed it has taken a cancer diagnosis for me to actually do it. i am an adult. and being an adult means doing things, daily, that are hard. that you don’t want to do. but your responsibilities require.

for as long as i can remember, i am the person on one side of my family who is always intimately involved in the business of death. so why is my own shit not together. the time for planning all of this out is when you are of good health and mind. it is depressing as hell trying to account for everything, especially so, when you have a cancer cloud hanging over your head. no one wants to have those discussions now.

but responsible to a fault. i have to. if not now, when. so yeah, probably the day of my diagnosis i reached out to an attorney friend to make sure i know my plans are in place. only, i have managed to find the time to do everything but complete the damned paperwork. procrastinators gonna procrastinate. amirite.

again people. please don’t be like me. be better than me. the time is now to have these hard conversations. and then after having them. file your paperwork. use your eap’s to your advantage — most include legal services. it was definitely on my list of things to mark done this year. i really posted about it in may — my how quickly your entire world changes.

procrastinators gonna procrastinate. but yeah, cancer trumps lazy. let me get to work.

Anna, You are right. No one wants to talk about it, so we have to be sure to take the initiative and get it done. None of us know the day or the hour. That’s why we have the option to update our paperwork.

    Take care and stay strong!
Continued prayers for you and Barbara.

    Love,

    Travis
